It’s hard to believe that something as big as an E-Bus could be a hidden market disruptor. But that’s exactly what’s happening in the transportation battery industry. The market has quickly expanded in the last two years from an installed base of only a few dozen buses globally to more than 20,000 by the end of 2015. And that growth will continue to expand to an estimated 200,000 E-Buses by 2020.
Replacing the traditional diesel engines used for more than a century in the bus sector with an electric drivetrain introduces several immediate advantages: cleaner urban air, lower fuel costs, a quieter ride, etc. The recent boom in this segment, however, has done something else: it has created an enormous market for transportation batteries that has so far had as much (and maybe even more) of an impact on the battery market than the EV industry.
Two dynamic forces are behind the surge in E-Bus sales. The first is the decline in the price of batteries, which enables a profitable business model for the operators of bus systems using E-Bus technologies. The second is a dramatic increase in government subsidies for E-Bus purchases by municipalities in China, starting in 2014.
